Another recent final design for fashion textiles and how I envisage this could be used on a top designed for a high street retailer.

Designing for Fashion Textiles

BUTTERFLY_BLOG

A Fashion Textiles design for AW13/14  created using mixed media.

Just a little over seven months ago, I started a BA Hons in Design (Surface).

In that small amount of time, my life has changed dramatically and I have grown so much as a designer. I have found new mediums to work with and experimented with new techniques as well as spending my days hanging out with some awesome people.

Although I am still a Photoshop and Illustrator geek… and I will ALWAYS be ‘MAC’ till I die… I have found a new love for drawing and filling sketchbooks….a new love for research and trends. But one of the biggest new loves I have found is that for Fashion Textiles.

I had always embarked on this journey to use my designs as pretty papers, wallpapers, accessories, cushions and homeware, but now I see them on hangers in Topshop, River Island and All Saints.

With that in the back of my mind and the persuasion of others, I have chosen to specialise my degree in ‘Fashion Textiles’ as oppose to ‘Surface Design’.

Been at Uni has really opened my eyes and Surface is so much more than my vision of ‘Print’, it is all about ceramics, 3D, Plaster, Metal…intergrating all manners of surface to play an important part in the final design.

Whilst Fashion Textiles is all about the manipulation of fabric from print through to its cut and hang….i love it!

I am so excited by this little turn in direction and can’t wait to show you some of my work for the previous two modules.

I’ve been so busy creating and having fun, there is plenty to come!

Let’s fly!

bloghop-FLY-flyer_

I am so pleased to be joining over 50 international Surface Pattern Designers for today’s bloghop! You have probably just hopped here from the lovely Sharon Minkhuk. Weren’t her designs just gorgeous?! As you probably may have worked out by now, Emerald is the Pantone Color of the Year 2013, curated by Believe Creative Studio and starting at www.patternaddict.blogspot.fr we have been challenged to be inspired by this to create our own mini collections!

For those of you that may not have ‘met’ me before, I am Claire….Claire Smillie and I am absolutely addicted to the wonderful (and sometimes crazy!) world of design. There is absolutely nothing I enjoy more than researching, creating and designing. You can see a selection of my work on my website http://www.clairesmillie.com

Our designs started with the idea of flight….firstly I brainstormed ideas surrounding flight…wings, hot air balloons, butterflies, bees, wasps, birds, aeroplanes….the list was endless but if you know me then you would know that I just had to go with the idea of birds. They are just so me. I then looked through my sketchbooks for any images/motifs that called out to me and found this wonderful collaged flower that I had previously created

along with some nature inspired sketches/markings.

I then set to work to create my mini collection of three designs, remembering the importance of Emerald Green. I have to admit here that Emerald Green is not a colour I am naturally drawn to (even though it is my birthstone!) so it took me a little time playing with the colours to get this just right but I’m loving it now and think it has come together beautifully!

My favourite is the one on the top right absolutely gorgeous and I love all the layers…think this would look great as wallpaper or maybe even the front cover of a diary?!

2013 is going to be a GOOD year. I can feel it. So much to do, so much to accomplish. If you follow my blog (or even my Facebook or twitter) you’ll  probably know from my video post, my word for the year is TOGETHER…..together as a family and together as a community…that is where we are strongest. Which leads me on to my challenge for the year…one eighty in one eighty…. I want to contribute to and strengthen our community of designers. And I think this idea could do just that.

I am going to challenge myself to interview one hundred and eighty designers this year……. each for one hundred and eighty seconds (give or take a milli-second or two!)

Thats just THREE minutes of time…because I KNOW how important time is to us all..both for the viewers (as yes my plan is to record the interview…which will probably be video chats…so we can see each other!) and the designers who wish to participate. With well chosen questions, I can see these mini interviews are going to get very interesting!

So, how can you help ‘one eighty in one eighty?’ well I’d love for some of you to be interviewed 🙂 If you’re up for it, then drop me an email at clairelouisesmillie@hotmail.co.uk and we can getting planning your segment. If you’d rather not be interviewed, you can still join in the fun here on my blog as I will be posting each and every interview for you to see!

This is a BIG challenge (and I’m hoping to raise the bar by getting some amazing designers on board) but I am determined to make it!

Wish me Luck and make sure you join me on the way!

****To keep up-to-date don’t forget you can follow me on twitter (claire_smillie) or ‘like’ me on Facebook (designedbyclairesmillie)****

Now, don’t forget to hop on over to the next blog, which I am so pleased is my good friend Nicky Ovitt from California, USA. She is a wonderful designer and I for one, can not wait to see what she has created!

11:25 and still smiling…

SO, its 11:25 on a Saturday night and here I am working away at my desk…now that’s what I call commitment!

We’ve had some fantastic weekends of late and we have really been trying to make the most of this precious time together as a family, but with deadline looming this friday and the kids in bed, I am furiously  working away throwing every last ounce of energy into this brief. I desperately wanted a weekend away at the Clothes Show Live (Birmingham NEC) this weekend (surely armed with a student ticket could have been grounds to call it ‘educational?!’ or a ‘research’ trip?!) but with commitments it just really wasn’t possible. On the upside though, I’m pretty sure I have just about convinced Leon that a trip to the ‘Victoria & Albert’ Museum (hark at me, the one who usually HATES museums) would be fun!

So, back to the project in-hand…Now, this colours this project lends itself too, are not necessarily colours I am naturally drawn too or even actually appear in my designs very often, however it’s no secret I love to play and this design, with the colours changed really made me smile 🙂

It actually changes the design into something else completely! Love this! So me 🙂

Happy Weekend everyone!

Icing on the cake!

Today’s post is showcasing another of my recent final designs…which is actually very apt as today was the day where we were given the feedback for our first module’s work at the University. I can hardly still believe I am even on the course…let alone one module done and dusted. I really am so, so greatful and thankful everyday, that I am have been given this am.az.ing opportunity to experiment and develop my creativity. It has completely turned my life around…but so seemlessly and positivly.

It was obviously just meant to be.

In the few weeks I have been there, I already feel so much more alive, inspired and well-informed as a designer. To receive kind words and feedback from designers of whom I respect and admire, such as, “excellent body of work……… delicious with beautiful colour and varied surface texture….” is really just the icing on the cake.

BIG SMILES!
